Where did Ditch Digger to CEO and Blue Collar Begone come from?

Lately, I have been bombarded with the same questions over and over again…

“What is it that motivates you to be so driven?””Where did Ditch Digger to CEO and Blue Collar Begone come from?”

Let me take a few minutes to explain for everyone out there. I have been in the blue collar industry for about 10 years now. I cleaned carpets for over 4 years and was laid off due to a very slow post-Christmas season. This eventually led to 4 or 5 months of struggling to find a position that fit me just right which eventually ended up with me living at home with Dad again!

Or

Waking up in the middle of the night to my co-worker/hotel room mate smoking crack and “entertaining” a young lady with fishnet stockings whose name was clearly randomly chosen from the back of a cereal box.

Or

Working in the pitch black, dead of night when it was – 41 degrees Celsius (that’s -41.8 F for my American friends) because we had to get some pipe moved for the next morning. Then returning at 8 am the next morning for work after not finishing the night before until 1 am.

Or

Watching a co worker get pinned to a slab of concrete by a piece of clay the size of a Volkswagen after it rolled 30 meters downhill off of the edge of a trench.

Or

Constantly sacrificing holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and every other memorable events just so you wouldn’t be the first cut come layoff season.

Or

Having your body break down to the point of where you are in extreme pain when going up a simple flight of stairs.

Or

Living out of a suitcase

Or

Covering for your nightshift foreman who is hopped up on crack every night, not showing up and then blaming everything that goes wrong on you.

Or

After being with the same company for over 2 years, you only see a .55 cent raise, while other workers, who you trained, were given $1.25 after 6 months.

I am not sharing this with you to complain, it is to show you that I waited too long! I allowed life to come to me for far too long and wasted valuable time. Now, I am taking my life back. I now take my struggles from the past and allow them to fuel the fire taking me into the future. I am in control of my life. No more layoffs! No more work related injuries, drugs, prostitutes or any of the frustrations with working long hours away from family and friends. I choose to live a life of possibilities. I am possible-ifying my life!

How to Choose a Mentor

How to Choose a Mentor

Whatever you are trying to achieve, whether it be learning to snowboard, learn to play the guitar or learn to build new housing projects, the best way to learn anything, is to learn from someone who has done it already or is already doing it! Your mentor will simplify and speed up the learning process by steering you away from pitfalls that they, more than likely experienced through the always tough, “trial and error” process.

So… How do you choose a mentor for YOU?

Know what you want to accomplish – Make sure you clearly define what you want to accomplish. Set clear goals and timelines on what you want and where you want to go so that you can identify the type of mentor you should approach. Check the posting on goal setting for tips.

Research mentors in your chosen field

  • “Looking for someone with experience”-Choose someone with experience in the field you want to pursue. If you don’t, it’s like having a first year apprentice tell a journeyman how to do his job. It makes no sense.
  • “Time is of the essence” – Make sure the mentor has the time available to offer to foster a mentorship.
  • “Goaltending” – Someone with similar goals and personality will always make developing the relationship easier and more enjoyable.
  • “Personality Clash” – Make sure you will “like” your mentor to limit any potential for conflicts of interest. With Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and all the other Social Media available nowadays, you can get a pretty good idea of what a person is like without even talking to them.

Contact Potential Mentors - You can get a hold of anyone in today’s digital world. When I was looking to get into real estate investing, I did my research, emailed 3 potential mentors who seemed like a good fit and heard back from 2 of the 3 within 24 hours.

Provide as much or more value as you receive – A mentor is usually a very busy person. Obviously! That’s why you chose them. If your mentor commits their time to you to help you, make sure you give them your best and remain coachable.  Don’t allow yourself to get “know it all” syndrome.

Show your gratitude – Make sure you show your gratitude. Simply taking action and doing what your mentor tells you is the simplest and most rewarding way for you to show him or her your gratitude.

The PMS Triangle – Getting Physical

The PMS Triangle – Getting Physical

Let’s focus on the “P” of the PMS Success Triangle. So what do we mean by physical effort?

PMS_Triangle

Any effort that requires taking physical action would fall into this category. So preparing yourself physically for success – eating properly, exercising and keeping a strong and healthy body does play it’s part but is just one piece of the puzzle here. The most important aspect of the Physical part of the PMS Triangle is the physical action of “action taking.”

Taking action is usually the point in the process that people tend to magically disappear. Research, planning and all the preliminary parts of the process seem to be a little easier for people to commit to because you can always walk away if things become uncomfortable or challenging. When push comes to shove and it’s time to take action, that’s when people tend to get “cold feet.”

With blue collar, construction-type personalities I have found that we seem to be the exception to the rule here. We tend to be very action orientated and welcome the opportunity to just, “get ‘er done.” With that being said, we are talking about some fairly significant changes here and we all know, blue collar construction-type personalities don’t always do well with change!

But here’s the thing….

If you’re rigging a load, and it just doesn’t seem to be fitting, you don’t keep trying and fighting with it, shoving it hoping it might fit! You don’t decide since you have to change the game plan a bit, you’re just going to give up and walk away. The job has to get done! So what do you do? You lower the load, re-assess and then CHANGE your plan accordingly to ensure success the next time. Then you TAKE ACTION and you “get ‘er done!”

Why attempt to fight and shove life into a spot where it’s not fitting?

If you want to change the way your life is and what your life has in it, how do you expect it to change if you continue to walk away from tough situations? Simply, take the time to reassess your life, and take action. PHYSICALLY DO what you need to, to ensure success. To ensure you start heading in YOUR right direction.

Once you start following the PMS Triangle, opportunities are going to start finding you on a regular basis. Don’t walk away! Don’t be scared of change! This is a very important and necessary step in going from ditch digger to CEO.

Thankfulness….

2009
11.27

Today In the USA we give thanks, a day set aside to be thankful for what we have in most cases. Sad that it has to be a special day, shouldn’t we be thankful for every day, hour, moment, and second we are alive? There are so many things we say we are thankful for; how many of them are material? Does your statue, give you real value, does it say who you really are?

It is your heart not your mind that expresses you as a being, and person of value. It does not matter if you are homeless or live in a great mansion. It matters that you care for others. He who dies with the most toys is not the winner. It is the person who touches, and tries to improve the most hearts and the most souls that has the most treasures. The ability to help give someone else hope when we aren’t even sure of our own life, has more value then all the riches of the globe.

To be able to see a flower for its beauty, when everyone else calls it a weed or to look at another child, person, or living thing without judgment and see great value no matter their statue is real appreciation. We have no color, religion, or nationality, the Earth from space has no boundaries other then mountains and bodies of water, man has learned to conquer the physical limitations, it is time to set aside the mental programming we received our whole lives and accept each other openly.

Be thankful for the experiences of the people who have come and gone in your life, the value they brought is a lesson to cherish, even if it brought you great pain at the time of your experiences together. Be especially thankful for the people who become a permanent part of your life and cherish their life as yours

When you can accept the fact there is a greater plan for us and everything does happen for a reason, you can be thankful for what you have, or don’t have. It isn’t about what you have, but who you have in your life. If you can spend time of value with your family enjoy as much as you can. Time does not stop, have a replay or do over button. Make the best of the real thing. The past was less then a second and the future is coming just as fast.  If you are not be lucky enough to be with your loved ones share your heart with them in your mind, think of the good times and believe and know you will be together again.

Happy Thanksgiving Future!

From Ditch Digger to CEO – Step 6

Construction Job Site to the Beach – Combine Physical, Mental & Spiritual in Everything you do

The sixth step in going From Ditch Digger to CEO is combining your physical, mental and spiritual aspects to create a state of success harmony. To illustrate what I mean, have a look at the horrible artwork below:

PMS_Triangle

I call this the PMS Triangle. Go ahead… have a good laugh… I know I snickered a bit when I thought of the name.

A triangle is made of 3 sides. No one side no more or less important than the last. All three side contribute to the end result; a triangle! Same ideas can be associated with the PMS triangle. There are 3 sides to the PMS triangle; no one side is more or less important than the last.

Physical: Blue collar and construction personalities do not usually have a problem with the physical aspect of this process but the physical part is more than just throwing around a bunch of heavy… “stuff”. It’s more about the actual physical follow through and action-“izing” when your opportunity presents itself. Keep your eyes open, the opportunities are about to come fast and furious at you!

Mental: I agree! Blue collar workers are not known for being big on the mental aspects of life. Most blue collar people I have met cringe at the thought of sitting in a classroom for even a day. This is your chance to set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd. The mental phase is the preparation part of the process. This is gathering information and education but also going beyond that. To complete daily visualization exercises to keep a strong mental image of what it is that you desire most.

Spiritual: I know! I get it! Blue collar tough guys (and gals) do not typically want to talk about spiritual anything! I get that… but if you’re genuinely determined to change your life and create more opportunities and abundance in your life; well… sorry about your luck! Spirituality plays a huge role! Just as big the physical part and just as big as the mental part. I’m not talking about becoming a religious devote, I mean getting in touch with the inner you. Start to figure out what it is you want in life on a deeper level. Start to understand and really “feel” your desires. Try meditation. Try Yoga. Try anything that is going to help you align you and your desires in life. The power this creates is unbelievable.

By combining efforts with the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of life, we begin to see immediate changes in our lives. You will have countless opportunities come to you easily and frequently. It will not be long before you go from Ditch Digger to CEO.

Stay tuned for a few additional tips and tricks to speed up the process of going from Ditch Digger to CEO – Coming Soon

Construction Job Site to the Beach – Become a Lifelong Student

We have all been on a job with “that guy”… The guy that seems to know everything about everything. Even if he has only been turning wrenches for 2 weeks, he’s the guy that saunters around the site barking orders at the guys who have been doing it for 20 + years. You know the type of guy I’m talking about, and if you don’t know who I’m talking about, well then I would suggest listening a little more often and maybe shoving a sock in your cake hole!

These guys always made me laugh. They always seemed to have something to say about everything and they were always telling their co workers how great they were at this and how amazing they were at that. Whenever I heard these conversations, I knew right away, this person doesn’t know much about anything! The best comedians do not have to tell you that they are funny – You just know!

That same great comedian is always working tirelessly to improve on his craft. He is working with great writers or other comedians to make sure that the next time he is on stage, he leaves the audience with pains in their sides and deeper, more defined smile wrinkles on everyone’s face!

Do you want to become a General Foreman with your company, start your own business or become a world renowned writer? Don’t be the know-it-all! Be the one who dedicates the rest of your days to being a humble student of each subject and circumstance that will lead you to your ultimate goal.

Learning and educating yourself on subjects that interest you, is a simple way to enrich your life. Take courses to further your education. Surround yourself with successful and knowledgeable mentors, coaches and teachers, and most importantly, place yourself in situations where you can learn, succeed and grow on a regular basis. Not sure where to find a mentor? Check out Step 4 – Surround Yourself with a Mentor Who is already doing it.

Remove yourself from the situations and groups which have kept you from expanding and evolving into a greater more fulfilling experience. If you keep doing what you have been doing for years, how can you expect any different result?

If you dedicate yourself to becoming a lifelong student, every new relationship, every new job or opportunity will suddenly offer new situations and opportunities to improve your life professionally, personally and financially!

“If you are not learning, you are slowly dying.”

Clean and Presses – EESH!

2009
11.19

So I’m at the gym… and it’s bicep, shoulder and core day. It’s a rough one! I am warming up on the bike thinking about the routine I am about to torture my body with and I had the thought, “I should try clean and presses today.” For anyone who doesn’t know what clean and presses are, click here for a short video. (What a pansy! Only 502 pounds… HA!)

This ex-Olympic weight-lifting exercise is great for the shoulders, back and legs. It also sucks big time! It’s grueling and painful… not an easy exercise to coast through. If you try to dog it, you are opening yourself to the potential for severe injury. Hence, the reason why I try to avoid it like an ex-girlfriend who you just “stopped calling.”

Nike would be proud, I decided to “just do it”, walked over to the squat rack, loaded up the weight and started pushing. The first set went pretty well. The second set was burning pretty good. Third set, I’m pretty sure I let out a mild whimper and on the fourth set, I’m not sure if I wiped away more sweat or tears.

Afterwards, as I laid in a crumpled mess across a flat bench, it started to feel really good. My shoulders felt full and solid. My back seemed more powerful and posture improved. I suddenly felt energized and ready to kill the rest of my workout. I carried on for the next 45 minutes with an intense drive that I haven’t felt in quite some time.

Getting changed, I spent a moment or two reflecting on the workout I had just completed. It seemed that the one exercise I feared and loathed the most, was the one exercise I needed to do the most. To fuel the intensity and motivation to carry me through the rest of the workout. Interesting! So what you’re telling me then is; “The things, activities and actions I fear most, are the exact things I should be doing!?!?!?”

Leave it to me to learn a life lesson at the gym!

I’ve already seen massive results with my new online workout routine which is perfect for my nomadic lifestyle. I have abs again! Check out PHAT Training Online!

Construction Job Site to the Beach – Surround Yourself with a Mentor who is Already Doing it

You may be asking, “What is a mentor?” “Why do I need a mentor?” “What is a mentor going to do for me?” Well, let’s have a look at how a mentor will take you from the Construction Job Site to the Beach.

What is a mentor?” – Where are my trades people out there? Remember when you were apprenticing? Remember that third year or journeyman who took you under their wing and showed you the ropes? Remember how they took the time to show you the easiest and quickest ways to perform each part of the job? They were mentoring you. Whether you knew it at the time or not, you were taking instructions from a mentor – Your mentor.

Why do I need a mentor?” – A mentor is any wise guide or trusted coach who is willing to share with you their knowledge, wisdom and experiences which they have gathered through their years of successes and failures. If you want to be an electrician, the quickest and easiest way to learn your trade would be from an experienced electrician. If you want to be a successful entrepreneur, the quickest and easiest route towards success as an entrepreneur would be to learn from an already successful entrepreneur.

What is a mentor going to do for me?” – A mentor will share their experiences and wealth of knowledge with you therefore limiting the mistakes you would make if you had tried to accomplish these tasks on your own. Trial and error is a very tedious, trying and expensive process. Learn from your mentors past mistakes and save your sanity!

Ok… One last question….

How do I choose a mentor?” – Great Question!! It’s also a very important question.  If you want to be a carpenter, who do you think you should look at to be a mentor? That’s right! A journeyman Carpenter with 20 years experience who owns his own company. If you want to be a successful real estate investor, who should you contact? A real estate investor who has done hundreds of deals with experience closing the type of deals you want to work on.

In an upcoming article called, “Choosing Your Best Mentor for You,” I’ll discuss how to dig deeper to make sure you find the best mentor for you to quickly take you from the Construction Job Site to the Beach.

The Construction Job Site Jedi Mind Trick – How to Have Every Co-Worker Trust & Rave About You

When I was back in high school, I was hanging out with a good friend of mine and we were having one of our regular drunken philosophical debates about life, he told me something I never forgot. “Scott, you have this unbelievable ability to make people like you.” At that point in time, it was nice to hear but I didn’t really care that much. All I cared about was where the next beer, how I could make everyone in the room laugh or what color of underwear the girl across the room from me was wearing.

Fast forward 13 years (OMG, has it been that long????) and those memories along with that lifestyle are long passed but that comment still bears significance in my life. Especially now, working with some of the roughest, toughest, oilfield blue collar workers; I have this uncanny ability to connect with people of all ages, backgrounds and personalities.

I have revisited that conversation with my good friend a number of times over the last couple of years and tried to figure out what exactly it is about me that people are drawn to and I realized something. Even though I didn’t do it consciously, I had trained myself to approach each and every person in my life in a systematic approach which I call, “The Construction Job Site Jedi Mind Trick!”

Conspicuously monitor to get a feel for their natural energy level – In as subtle way as possible, observe how a persona acts. Are they a calm, relaxed thinker who plans before they move or are they the hyperactive, almost cartoon-like go-getter who is always head down @$$ up? If you take the time to learn the natural energy that a person gives off and learn how to manipulate your actions to match their energy level, you will “Construction Job Site Jedi Mind Trick” everyone you ever come across.

Ask simple probing questions about the other person – Make sure the questions you ask sound like you genuinely want to know the answer and that you’re not just asking a question as a formality so that the other person is then obliged to ask about you and therefore leading to your own verbal diarrhea. Listen and respond with follow up questions. Everyone’s favorite topic is always “ME”… Use this to further hypnotize co-workers and lock them into the “Construction Job Site Jedi Mind Trick”

Always make yourself open and approachable – Use humor and sensitivity here. Everyone loves humor and no one is sensitive, so by you offering both, you make yourself the number one place for someone to go when they need to sound off or vent!

That’s it! By manipulating your natural energy, asking a few questions and by joking around with the guys, you will become the Jedi on the Jobsite and everyone will find you a pleasure to be around, rave about you to your boss and request for you to be on their crew; never knowing that it was all because you performed on them, “The Construction Job Site Jedi Mind Trick!”

From Ditch Digger to CEO – Step 3

2009
11.17

From Ditch Digger to CEO – Start the Day with Simple Successes to Gain Positive Momentum

In step # 2 of From Ditch Digger to CEO – Plan to Succeed Daily, it was recommended that you set 6 goals for every day. Of those 6 goals there were 2 simple, easily accomplishable goals to start your day off. This is a very important step in developing habitual daily success.

Love What You’re Doing – These simple goals should be routine type things that you enjoy doing. Things like going to the gym, walking the dog, writing, meditating or anything that you will look forward to doing and go out of your way to accomplish daily. This should not include goals like, “smoke half a pack of cigarettes by 9am” or “Get a front row seat at the peelers for the brunch smorgasbord.” The idea here is to change what we are currently doing so we can go from Ditch Digger to CEO.

Get at it Early – Don’t waste any daylight… get up early and attack these goals with everything you got! The idea is to create great positive energy which will build momentum and carry you through the tougher things you will face as the day progresses. Make this a game (No! Not a drinking game!) and pretend that this is part of your warm-up before a big game. If you push it in warm-ups and get the blood and adrenaline pumping, when the tip off, kick off or puck drop comes, you’ll be ready to steam roll your opponent.

Celebrate Your Victories – This is the most important step in the process. Too many times people accomplish something and strike a line through that task and move onto the next. STOP THAT!! Everyone saves the celebration for the big ones but without celebrating the little victories you will never make it to the big game! Every time you accomplish anything, no matter how small, take even 2 minutes to close your eyes and raise your hands in victory. Feel like you have accomplished something great because you have! Ok… ok… you’ve earned it! Have that cigarette!

Ride the Momentum Wave into Greatness – Now that you have that big boulder of momentum rolling your way, ride it and knock everything down that stands in your way for the remainder of the day. Those massive goals that once seemed mountainous will seem minuscule as long as you follow these simple steps. You WILL go from Ditch Digger to CEO in no time!
